This will be the 5th time I've run Zane Grey on the Highline Trail near Payson, Arizona. The race isn't until April 2013 and is typically billed as the (or one of the) toughest 50 milers in the country.
The year I ran my best I had just run Old Pueblo 50 in a time of 10 1/2 hours. The same distance at Zane took me 15 just a month later.
I feel good right now in my training and if I can get some good hill work in this winter, I hope to see a vast improvement next spring.
Just about everyone I know who runs this with me speaks of a similar pattern of high hopes and miserable outcomes. Why do we keep coming back?
Maybe this year will be different?
Picture from 2011 Zane Grey 50, still learning the hard way... (again, and again and again).
